WHAT IS INULIN AND WHY IT'S GOOD FOR YOU
FiberPasta Products are fortified with inulin fiber. Inulin is a natural fiber derived from the root of the chicory plant. Inulin fiber is considered a functional fiber based on its exceptional degree of health benefits. In some nutrition circles, inulin is considered a pre-biotic or “culinary medicine” because of its many positive effects on health and body function.
The American Society for Nutritional Sciences published an abstract entitled, Nutrition and Health Benefits of Inulin and Oligofructose Fiber. Inulin and Oligofructose: What are they?. This reviewed states that inulin “possess several functional and nutritional properties ,which may be used to formulate innovative healthy foods for today’s consumers”.
This review was based on scientific studies validating the healthy effects of inulin which include:
- Gastrointestinal health
- Enhance the action of probiotics
- Improved satiety or reduction in hunger
- Weight loss
- Improved uptake of calcium
- Improvements in Immune system function
- Improvements in elimination and constipation
The report explains when inulin is consumed, it is not digested by the gastrointestinal tract. Because of this lack of absorption in the gut, there is little calorie value or rise in blood sugar values compared to other forms of fiber.
The paper includes a positive review of inulin’s taste, describing it as pleasant and slightly sweet without raising blood sugars.
